English Language and English Literature

Examination Board: AQA   What is the aim of the Course?English Language: To enable students of all abilities to develop the skills they need to read, understand and analyse a wide range of different texts covering the 19th, 20th and 21st century time periods. Students will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes. This specification will ensure that students can read fluently and write clearly, coherently and accurately using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.English Literature: This specification encourages students to develop knowledge and skills in reading, writing and critical thinking. Through the range of literature that they will be exposed to, students have a chance to develop culturally and acquire knowledge of the best that has been thought and written over time in the English cannon. Students will be encouraged to read widely for pleasure, think in depth; both critically and evaluatively about what they are reading, and to articulate their ideas and understanding.

English Language

  • Critical reading and comprehension: summary and synthesis; evaluation of a writer’s choices; comparing texts.
  • Writing: producing clear and coherent texts and writing for impact.
  • Spoken Language: presenting information and ideas; responding to spoken language and spoken standard English.

English Literature

  • Shakespeare play
  • 19th-Century novel
  • Modern Drama
  • Poetry
  • Modern Prose

The skills developed through the study of these texts:

  • Reading comprehension and critical reading.
  • Writing effectively about literature for a range of purposes

Assessment and Examination

Assessment takes the form of written examinations and spoken language assessment (non-exam). The scheme of assessment for English Language is:Two written examinations =100%Spoken Language (endorsed certificate)English Literature assessment is based upon: Two written examinations = 100%
