What is the aim of the course?
To enable students to develop:
- an understanding of German in a variety of contexts
- a knowledge of German vocabulary and structures
- transferable language learning skills and make connections between English and German
- awareness and understanding of countries and communities where German is spoken
- to have an awareness of Europe and Global issues
What will you study in this subject and how will it be assessed?
The 3 GCSE themes are: Identity and Culture, Local and Global issues and Current and Future Study.
Paper1: Listening in German
This unit draws on vocabulary and structures from across the three specified themes. Students will be tested on their ability to understand spoken German. Testing is through a variety of tasks which require a response, written or non-verbal, to demonstrate understanding. It is assessed by a 35 or 45-minute examination and accounts for 25% of the grade.
Unit 2: Speaking in German
This unit is facilitated internally but assessed externally by the exam board. Students are expected to communicate and interact effectively in speech for a variety of purposes across a range of specified contexts. They should be able to use accurate pronunciation and intonation to be understood by a native speaker. This unit accounts for 25% of the grade.
3: Reading in German
Students will be tested on their ability to understand written German.
Testing is through a variety of tasks which require a response, written or non-verbal, to demonstrate understanding.
It is assessed by a 45 or 60 minute examination. Translation from German to English is also a requirement. This paper accounts for 25% of the grade.
Unit 4: Writing in German
Students are expected to communicate effectively for a variety of purposes. They should be able to write short texts and manipulate the language to write longer texts reflecting creativity and complexity. Translation from English to German is also a requirement. It accounts for 25% of the GCSE grade.
